Protective effect of taurine against alendronate‐induced gastric damage in rats

Abstract: Alendronate (ALD) causes serious gastrointestinal adverse effects. The aim of this study was to investigate whether taurine (TAU), a semi-essential amino acid and an antioxidant, improves the alendronate-induced gastric injury. Rats were administered 20 mg/kg ALD by gavage for 4 days, either alone or following treatment with TAU (50 mg/kg, i.p.). On the last day of treatment, following drug administration, pylorus ligation was performed and 2 h later, rats were killed and stomachs were removed. Gastric acidity… Show more

“…Taurine failed to affect the elevated gastric acidity. Similarly, taurine had no significant effect on the increased gastric acidity reported in alendronate-induced gastric damage in rats [36]. The gastroprotective effects of spermine [37] and taurine [36] as represented by reduction in GUI were previously demonstrated.…”

“…Similarly, taurine had no significant effect on the increased gastric acidity reported in alendronate-induced gastric damage in rats [36]. The gastroprotective effects of spermine [37] and taurine [36] as represented by reduction in GUI were previously demonstrated. The suppression of acid secretion by spermine might be attributed to uncoupling of the gastric K + /H + exchange pump in the secretory membrane, thus decreasing the ATPase-mediated uptake of H + .…”

“…The correlation between GI AE with increased pH and inflammation has been confirmed in these models using gastro protective and anti-inflammatory agents, showing a decrease in the occurrence and magnitude of these AE [43][44][45][46][47][48]. Thus, in the last years, different oral formulations than tablets have been tested and proposed for osteoporosis treatment [49].…”
