Protective Effect of p-Cymene on Lipopolysaccharide-Induced Acute Lung Injury in Mice

Abstract: In the previous study, the anti-inflammatory effect of p-cymene had been found. In this study, we investigated anti-inflammatory effects of p-cymene on acute lung injury using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced acute lung injury (ALI) mouse model. The cell counting in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) was measured. The animal lung edema degree was evaluated by wet/dry weight (W/D) ratio. The superoxidase dismutase (SOD) activity and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity was assayed by SOD and MPO kits, respective… Show more

“…The excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), which occurs during the pathogenesis of pulmonary lesion, contributes to lipid peroxidation in the biological membrane leading to severe cell damage (Chen et al 2014). MDA is the breakdown product of polyunsaturated fatty acids by oxidation and is a biomarker of oxidative stress-mediated lipid peroxidation (LPO).…”

“…Inhibitory effect on leukotriene production [138] and secretion of cytokines such as IL-1 b and TNF-a from immune cells [143] as well as IL-6, TNF-a, and IL-1b in bronchoalveolar lavage were observed for c-terpinene. The later effect is likely mediated by interfering with the activation of NF-jB pathway [144]. Treatment with p-cymene also significantly inhibited the release of TNF-a but not IL-10 in FMLP-stimulated neutrophils [145].…”
