Protective Effect of Curcumin against Sodium Salicylate-Induced Oxidative Kidney Damage, Nuclear Factor-Kappa Dysregulation, and Apoptotic Consequences in Rats

Abstract: This study examined the effect of sodium salicylates (SS), alone and in combination with curcumin (CUR), on kidney function and architecture in rats. Five rat groups were given 1 mL physiological saline/rat orally, 1 mL olive oil/rat orally, 50 mg CUR/kg bwt orally, 300 mg SS/kg bwt intraperitoneally, or CUR+SS for 15 days. The hematological indices, serum protein profile, serum electrolytes balance, oxidative stress, and lipid peroxidation of kidney tissues were assessed. The histopathological examination and… Show more

“…The liver is the main site of xenobiotic metabolism and is consequently highly susceptible to its harmful impacts 27 , 51 . In the current study, a marked impaired liver function was detected in the rats orally given BHA, PS, SB, BA, and CP for 90 days, which reflected in a significant increase in serum AST and ALT levels than control ones.…”

“…The liver is responsible for a major portion of xenobiotic metabolism 26 . The kidney tubule cell produces proinflammatory cytokines that directly respond to infections or toxins 27 . These cells function as proinflammatory cells, or immune system responders are crucial in developing renal dysfunction 28 .…”

“…As a result, CCM showed beneficial roles in a variety of health problems such as autoimmune diseases (Aggarwal and Harikumar 2009 ), cancer (Momtazi and Sahebkar 2016 ), diabetes mellitus (Pivari et al 2019 ), and liver disease (Abd-Elhakim et al 2021c ; Jalali et al 2020 ). Also, CCM has strong anti-inflammatory (Aggarwal and Harikumar 2009 ), antiapoptotic (Abd-Elhakim et al 2021b ), antigenotoxic (Saber et al 2019 ), and immunostimulant (Mollazadeh et al 2019 ) activities. Besides, CCM has shown important protective effects against widespread ototoxic substances and hearing disorders (Bucak et al 2015 ; Soyalıç et al 2017 ; Soyalıç et al 2016 ).…”

“…Currently, a global interest has been directed toward using medicinal herb products to reduce adverse effects associated with drug use (Abd-Elhakim et al 2022 , 2021a , b ; Abd El-Rahman et al 2020 ). The current study revealed that PTL oral dosing for 7 days resulted in a significant decrease in weight gain with a significant increase in hepatosomatic index.…”
