Protective Effect of Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (L.) Lam. Fruit on Dextran Sulfate Sodium-Induced Ulcerative Colitis in Mice: Role of Keap1/Nrf2 Pathway and Gut Microbiota

Abstract: homeostasis. BGF possessed protective effect against DSS-induced colitis. The potential mechanism of BGF may involve the amelioration of inflammatory and oxidative status, activation of Keap1/Nrf2 signaling pathway, and maintenance of micro-ecological balance of the host. This study provides experimental evidence for the traditional application of BGF in the treatment of diarrhea, and indicates that BGF may be a promising candidate against colitis.

“…Therefore, once Bacteroides decreases, it has a safeguarding effect on inflammatory bowel disease [ 49 , 50 ]. In this dissertation, consistent with previously published papers, the abundance of Bacteroides (pathogenic bacteria) in the intestine of a mouse model with DSS was significantly greater [ 51 , 52 ], and our study showed that MP could significantly inhibit this kind of harmful bacterium proliferation. The physiological effects of Lactobacillus have been confirmed in many scientific practices and have gradually moved into the public eye.…”

“…Further analysis found that Anaerotruncus,is a probiotic and dominant microorganism in DSS-induced group. This result is contrary to the previous reports, which may be caused by the stress reaction of the body [32,33]. In addition, INN, IND and INB have different regulation on structure of gut microbiota in UC mice.…”

“…NRF2 regulates the expression of phase II detoxification enzymes NADH dehydrogenase quinone 1 (NQO1) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1). The latter as antioxidant enzymes play an important role in oxidative stress and increasing cellular antioxidant capacity [ 35 ]. In this experiment, we found that zinc enhanced the expression of oxidative stress-related proteins NRF2, NQO1, and HO-1, and played an antioxidant effect.…”
