Protective effect of Aurelia aurita against free radicals and streptozotocin-induced diabetes

Abstract: <p class="Abstract">The present work was carried out to identify the anti-oxidant and anti-diabetic activities of Aurelia aurita. The chemical profiling analysis showed that it possess different biologically active secondary metabolites like phenols, alakoids, steroids etc. The methanolic extract showed different free radical scavenging activity as ascorbic acid with  IC50 values 202, 205, 153 µg on DPPH, hydroxyl and superoxide free radicals. The extract significantly reduced the … Show more

“…The powder of dried seeds of P. longifolia (1.0 kg) was extracted with absolute methanol at room temperature (3 times). The whole extract was evaporated under low pressure to obtain a methanolic extract (ME, 45 g, 4.5% w/w) 30 . By using column chromatography (CC) of mesh size 100-200 via a hexane/ethyl acetate solvent system (step gradient flow), ME extract (5.0 g) yielded five major fractions (F1-5).…”

“…The antioxidant activity was assessed by the 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical assay [9] in triplet. Initially, 100 µL of 100 µM of DPPH in ethanol was prepared and reacted with known concentrations i.e.…”

“…The metabolites (1-9) and RM-Ac was subjected to 1,1diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay in triplicate, and results are reported as percentage of inhibition of DPPH free radicals [17]. Initially, to the known concentrations of the sample added 0.004% DPPH dissolved in methanol and incubated for half-an-hour at 37°C.…”
