Protective effect of allicin against glycidamide-induced toxicity in male and female mice

Abstract: Acrylamide is known to be a neurotoxic, genotoxic, and carcinogenic compound. Glycidamide has a close relationship to the toxic mechanism of acrylamide. In order to explore the toxic mechanism of acrylamide, we further discussed the effects of oral administration of allicin on glycidamide-induced toxicity by determining the hematological parameters like AST, ALT, LDH, BUN, creatinine, ROS, and 8-OHdG, and biochemical parameters such as MDA, MPO, SOD, GST and GSH in the kidney, liver, brain and lung of male and… Show more

“…Allicin administration significantly reduced LDH activity when compared to gentamicin-treated group. This result agreed with Wang et al [32] who reported the oral administration of allicin significantly decreased the damage indexes of AST, ALT and LDH. On the other hand, our results showed allicin failed to significantly increase the reduced levels of serum albumin.…”

“…Allicin treatment decreased serum levels of creatinine and blood urea nitrogen levels when compared to gentamicin-treated group. This result came in line with Wang et al [32] who showed the oral administered allicin with a concentration of 5, 10, and 20 mg/kg b.w./day could significantly ANOVA, analysis of variance; GNT, gentamicin; AL, allicin; SEM, standard error of mean. Data expressed as means ± SEM (n = 8).…”

“…The daily intake of AA higher than 10 μg kg −1 bw day −1 can cause toxic effects on humans (Altunay et al ., ). Our previous studies provided the evidence that the toxicity of AA was partially based on oxidative damage (Zhang et al ., , ; Wang et al ., ), thus dietary antioxidants might have a protective role against AA‐induced toxicity (Rodríguez‐Ramiro et al ., ; Chen et al ., ; Khalifa et al ., ). Numerous studies confirmed that phytochemicals acting as antioxidants can inhibit the toxicity of AA, such as rutin (Motamedshariaty et al ., ), curcumin (Kurien, ), blueberry (Zhao et al ., 2015a) and strawberry (Zhao et al ., 2015b).…”
