“…Auch die aus England (RISHBETH 1970) und Finnland (KALLIO 1971;KALLIO und HALLAKSELA 1979) gemeldeten Erfolge mit Bjerkandera adusta und Phlebiopsis gigantea -waren unter den hiesigen Verhaltnissen nieht reproduzierbar.…”

“…KALLIO (1971) reported that in Finland natural infection of Norway spruce stumps by air-borne spores of F. annosus was prevented at all times of the year by inoculation with P. gigantea, but not completely by four other species. Another experiment in which stumps were inoculated both with F, annosus and a competing fungus again demonstrated the superiority of P. gigantea, which gave virtually complete control over the period April to August and good control in most other months.…”

“…The use of antagonistic microbes and/or compounds they produce, provide an environmentally sound way of chemical wood protection (Preston et al, 1982). However, to be effective the antagonists should colonize the surface and interior parts/ compartments of the wood before the invasion by the hydrolytic microbes (Kallio, 1971). Currently, only synthetic chemicals with low toxicity and narrow-spectrum are allowed to be used in wood protection making it possible for biocontrol agents to compete in the same league with the chemical poisons with efficacy.…”

“…Biological protection of wood has been studied since the end of the 1960's (Ricard and Bollen, 1967;Nelson, 1969;Kallio, 1971;Hulme and Shields, 1972). At the time, the research focused on the isolation of antagonistic microbes (Greaves, 1970;Seifert et al, 1987;Zabel and Morrell, 1992), while the mechanisms of antagonism have been studied only recently (Bruce et al, 2003;Chin-A-Woeng, 2003;Howell, 2003;Fernando et al, 2005;Macagnana et al, 2008).…”
