OBJECTIVES: To determine the effects of Egb761 on testicular tissues and semen parameters in rats exposed to cellphone waves. BACKGROUND: EGb761 has antioxidant properties as a free-radical scavenger. Cellphone electromagnetic radiation (EMR) induces oxidative stress in cells. METHODS: Twenty-one Wistar albino male adult rats were divided into three groups (control, experimental, treatment), including seven rats in each. The experimental and treatment groups were exposed to cellphone EMR (0.96 W/kg) for six weeks (4 hrs/day). Egb761 (100 mg/kg/day) was also added to the treatment. Testes, epididymal semen and blood plasma were used for analysis. RESULTS: Exposure to cellular phone radiation resulted in a signifi cant impairment in testicular morphometry and histological structure, reduction of total and motile sperm numbers and plasma testosterone level. Egb761 administration improved testicular damage and led to a marked increase in plasma testosterone levels and total and motile sperm numbers. CONCLUSION: Male reproductive system is susceptible to cellphone radiation. Cellphone waves induce toxic effects in testicular tissues, impair spermatogenesis and cause an imbalance in testosterone hormone levels. Egb761 ameliorated these toxic effects by reversing testicular tissue damage, restoring normal spermatogenesis and hormone levels. This suggests that Egb761 is a potential therapeutic agent against EMR-induced male reproductive toxicity (Tab. 3, Fig. 6, Ref. 45). Text in PDF www.elis.sk.

Context: Satureja (Lamiaceae) species are used as flavoring compounds in food, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic industries because of its sweetness and simple cultivation characteristics. They have traditionally been used as muscle pain relievers, tonic, and carminative agents to treat stomach and intestinal disorders such as cramps, nausea, indigestion, and diarrhea, due to their considerable phytochemical characteristics. Objective: This review evaluates some information published since 1989 on Satureja genus from a systematic perspective in terms of its pharmacological and phytochemical characteristics. Materials and methods: Web of Science, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases were searched up to March 2014. ''Satureja'' was used as a research term without narrowing or limiting research elements. After obtaining all reports from database (a total number is about 637), the papers were carefully analyzed in order to find data related to the topic of this review. Results: In this review, 453 reports were used which were published between 1989 and 2014. The study was compiled into two sections (Pharmacology and Phytochemistry). In the pharmacology section, more than 50 different activities were studied. In the second section, in addition to other compounds and inorganic substances, volatiles, phenolic acids, and flavonoids were discussed. Discussion and conclusion: According to our contemporary information, Satureja species have been evaluated for their wide range of biological activities. However, a small part of these studies have been carried out on the active principles. Therefore, in the future, more studies should be carried out to identify responsible phytochemicals for the various activities.

ABSTRACT.To investigate the effect of chronic moderate exercise on male reproductive tract of Wistar rats submitted to a single dose of cyclophosphamide (CP). Animals were submitted to swimming exercise during 21 days or maintained at sedentary state. Trained (TCP) and sedentary (SCP) groups received a single dose of CP (200 mg kg -1 , i.p.). Trained (TCo) and sedentary (SCo) control animals received sterile PBS. Animals were killed after one week and testis, epidydimis and seminal vesicle contend were weighted. Testis were embebbed in parafim and stained with hemotaxilin and eosin. Fifty seminiferous tubules of each animal were analyzed by Johnsen score. Mean Sertoli cells counts per tubule and Leydig cells counts per area were evaluated. CP treatment impairs body weight gain in trained and sedentary animals. Liver and seminal vesicle contend were reduced only in SCo group. SCP animals presented decreased Johnsen scores, indicating a slight toxicity over germinative cells, whereas trained (TCo and TCP) animals presented increased Johnsen scores. Training increased Sertoli cell counts and prevented their loss in TCP group. Leydig cells counts were increased in trained animals, but decreased in CP treated ones (TCP). We conclude that exercise have some protective effect on male reproductive tract submitted to a single dose of CP. , ip). Os animais treinados (TCO) e sedentários (SCO) receberam PBS estéril. Os animais foram sacrificados após uma semana e os testículos, epidídimo e conteúdo da vesícula seminal foram pesados. As amostras foram embebidas em parafina e coradas com hematoxilina e eosina. Cinquenta túbulos seminíferos de cada animal foram analisados pelo escore Johnsen. A contagem média das células de Sertoli por túbulo e contagem das células de Leydig por área foram avaliadas. O tratamento CP prejudicou o ganho de peso corporal em animais treinados e sedentários. O fígado e o conteúdo da vesícula seminal foram reduzidos apenas no grupo SCO. Os animais SCP apresentaram menores escores de Johnsen, indicando uma toxicidade moderada sobre as células germinativas, enquanto os animais treinados (TCO e TCP) apresentaram escores de Johnsen mais altos. O treinamento aumentou a contagem de células de Sertoli e impediu a sua perda no grupo TCP. A contagem das células de Leydig foram aumentadas em animais treinados, mas reduzidas nos animais tratados com CP (TCP). Concluiu-se que o exercício tem algum efeito protetor sobre trato reprodutivo masculino de animais submetidos a uma dose única de CP.Palavras-chave: ciclofosfamida, exercício, trato reprodutiva.
