The implementation of condition monitoring for damage identification and the generation of a reliable digital twin are essential elements of preventive conservation. The application of this promising approach to Cultural Heritage (CH) sites is deemed truly beneficial, constituting a minimally invasive mitigation strategy and a cost-effective decision-making tool. In this light, the present work focuses on establishing an informative virtual model as a platform for the conservation of the monastery of Santa Maria de Salzedas, a CH building located in the north of Portugal. The platform is the first step towards the generation of the digital twin and is populated with existing documentation as well as new information collected within the scope of an inspection and diagnosis programme. At this stage, the virtual model encompasses the main cloister, whose structural condition and safety raised concerns in the past and required the implementation of urgent remedial measures. In the definition of a vibration-based condition monitoring strategy for the south wing of the cloister, five modes were identified by carrying out an extensive dynamic identification. Nonetheless, significant challenges emerged due to the low amplitude of the ambient-induced vibrations and the intrusiveness of the activities. To this end, a data-driven Optimal Sensor Placement (OSP) approach was followed, testing and comparing five heuristic methods to define a good trade-off between the number of sensors and the quality of the collected information. The results showed that these algorithms for OSP allow the selection of sensor locations with good signal strength.

En este trabajo se describen los efectos producidos por algunos sismos importantes en construcciones de la ciudad de Morelia, Michoacán, la morfología urbana, las características de los suelos, las fallas sísmicas locales, así como la evolución de parámetros de diseño sísmico que se han propuesto en los reglamentos de diseño locales. Se señala la importancia de la Red Sísmica Nicolaita, compuesta de diez estaciones acelerométricas, en la obtención de registros que permitan mitigar el riesgo sísmico y con los cuales ha sido posible establecer diferencias apreciables del movimiento de los suelos en la ciudad y que deben ser consideradas en estudios de peligro. También, se presentan algunos acelerogramas registrados y espectros de respuesta. El objetivo de este trabajo es mostrar que, de acuerdo con la historia sísmica y los daños producidos por eventos sísmicos pasados, la ciudad de Morelia es un sitio propenso a sismos destructivos, lo que vuelve fundamental contar con una red de monitoreo.

Historical buildings are the cultural heritage of the world. Preservation of historical buildings is important in the past and today. In particular, material fatigue, environmental vibration effects and natural disasters that occur over time cause great damage to historical structures. It is thought that many historical buildings will not reach the next years due to neglect. In order to prevent this situation, historical buildings should be maintained and strengthened if necessary. In addition, historical buildings should have sufficient stiffness to prevent collapse against pre-disaster situations. Stone barrel vaults are one of these historical cultural heritages. Many stone barrel vault type historical structures are frequently encountered today. In order for stone barrel vaults to be transferred to the future, care should be taken and they may need to be strengthened periodically, especially after disasters. For all these reasons, in this study, the foam concrete method, which is one of the retrofitting methods of buildings, is mentioned. Thus, the effect of the foam concrete method applied on an exemplary stone barrel vault on modal parameters has been demonstrated. In this comparative study, it was observed that the stiffness of the stone barrel vault increased with the foam concrete method. As a result of this study, it is suggested to retrofitting the stone barrel vault with the foam concrete method, taking into account the state of the stone barrel vault and environmental factors.
