Prosthetic valve endocarditis caused by Corynebacterium diphtheriae in a patient with pemphigus vulgaris

The patient died despite adequate medical therapy. This appears to be the first report of endocarditis caused by this species in a prosthetic aortic valve.

“…There are several reports of endocarditis occurring during or after initiation of immunosuppressive drug therapies in patients with a variety of diseases in the literature (Ihara et al, 2017;Moshkani Farahani et al, 2014), including atopic dermatitis which is a relatively less severe dermatological disease compared to PV (Tanioka, Iwata, Marumoto, & Kaneko, 2015). To the best of our knowledge, there are only two reported cases of patients who developed IE on native valves (Kayrak, Bacaksiz, Gul, & Sonmez, 2011), and one on a prosthetic valve (Namnyak, Bhat, Al-Jama, & Fathalla, 1987) while undergoing PV therapy.…”
