Prosthetic Rehabilitation with Palatal Lift/Augmentation in a Patient with Neurologic/Motor Deficit Due To Cancer Therapy for Chondrosarcoma

Abstract: This clinical report describes the prosthetic rehabilitation of a 25‐year‐old man with a history of grade II chondrosarcoma at the skull base who had undergone surgical resection and thereafter developed velopharyngeal incompetency (VPI), dysarthria, and dysphagia. Upon baseline fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES), the patient had an atypical pattern of VPI with minimal to no velar lift during speech, blow, or suck tasks, but near complete velar lift and seal during swallowing. A palatal augm… Show more

“…However, chemotherapy and radiotherapy are not the mainstay therapies for chondrosarcoma. The primary goal is to better understand the characteristics of conventional chondrosarcomas since Amer et al [13,22] reviewed and described non-conventional chondrosarcomas. In the present study, we identi ed prognostic factors of chondrosarcoma based on data from the SEER database from 2010 to 2016, which was veri ed using data from 2007 to 2009.…”

“…In one case, the combined prosthesis was used to improve dysarthria after stroke. 5 ) In the second case, for which it was used to manage dysphagia and dysarthria after surgery for chondrosarcoma, 6 ) although the improvement of dysarthria was emphasized, improved bolus transit was the only improvement observed for swallowing function. Currently, little is known regarding the effects of integrated PAP and PLP devices on swallowing function.…”
