Prostate mechanical imaging: 3-D image composition and feature calculations

Abstract: We have developed a method and a device entitled prostate mechanical imager (PMI) for the real-time imaging of prostate using a transrectal probe equipped with a pressure sensor array and position tracking sensor. PMI operation is based on measurement of the stress pattern on the rectal wall when the probe is pressed against the prostate. Temporal and spatial changes in the stress pattern provide information on the elastic structure of the gland and allow two-dimensional (2-D) and three-dimensional (3-D) recon… Show more

“…The shape of subcutaneous tumors is assumed to be a three-dimensional hemi-ellipsoid [14,15]. Hence, in our study we calculated the tumor volumes by a typical three-dimensional formula for ellipsoid-like tumor volume evaluation: V = π : 6 x L x W x H. The results were confirmed by applying the two-dimensional formula for evaluation of the same tumor volumes, recently proposed by Feldman et al [16]: V = π : 6 x ƒ(L x W) 3/2 .…”

“…A second challenge is the subsequent computer processing of the transduced data to obtain useful information (tactile data processing). Approaches have included vision-based processing [6,26], neural networks [5], and solid mechanics modeling [9,10], but a rigorous comparison of methods is lacking. A final challenge is determining the most effective means for relaying the tactile information to a human user (tactile display).…”
