Prostaglandins, Thromboxanes and the Pregnant Rat Uterus at Term

Abstract: 1 Prostaglandin and thromboxane release from the term pregnant (Day 22) rat uterus in vitro has been measured by radioimmunoassay and gas chromatography combined with mass spectrometry. 2 Prostacyclin (prostaglandin 12, PG12) and thromboxane A2 (TXA2) (measured as their metabolites. 6-oxo-PGFia and TXB,. respectivelv) were released in large amounts, while PGE2 and PGFXa were released in smaller amounts. PGD2 was released in the largest quantities.3 Treatment of the term pregnant rat uterus in vitro with the PG… Show more

“…Using RIA, gas chromatography, and mass spectroscopy to measure PG release by term pregnant rat uterine tissue, it was determined that PGD 2 release Ͼ PGI 2 and Tx Ͼ PGE 2 and PGF 2␣ [27]. Chan selectively measured PGE 2 and PGF 2␣ in both uterine and placental tissues in the pregnant rat [2].…”

“…PGF 2α contracts the guinea‐pig uterus and potentiates the contractile effect of ATP on guinea‐pig myometrium ( Dozi‐Vassilides et al ., 1976 ; Whalley & White, 1980a , 1980b ; Weichman & Tucker, 1982 ; Coleman & Parkington, 1988 ). PGl 2 contracts the rat uterus and potentiates the action of other spasmogens on this tissue ( Vane & Williams, 1973 ; Williams et al ., 1979 ; Phillips & Poyser, 1981 ). Consequently, the present findings are consistent with the hypothesis that the contractile actions of ATP, ATP, 2‐methylthio ATP, adenosine and UTP on the guinea‐pig uterus are mediated by prostaglandins, particularly PGF 2α and possibly also PGl 2 .…”
