Prospective multicenter study with a 1-year analysis of a new vascular graft used for early cannulation in patients undergoing hemodialysis

Abstract: This study demonstrated that the new, early-cannulation AVG graft can be cannulated soon after implantation without a significant difference in patency and complication rates compared with rates associated with standard cannulation of expanded polytetrafluoroethylene grafts in the literature. This new AVG may allow early removal or avoidance of TDC use in patients undergoing hemodialysis, potentially reducing or eliminating the number of days of catheter-dependent dialysis, but further studies will be needed t… Show more

“…Emerging alternatives to conventional polytetrafluoroethylene grafts, such as early-cannulation polytetrafluoroethylene conduits, have the potential advantage of reducing catheter dependence, but this is offset by the use of synthetic conduit for access creation (14,15). Therefore, improvements in catheter technology that can reduce the rate of catheter dysfunction will be critical toward improving clinical outcomes in dialysis recipients and reducing health care costs for patients with end-stage renal disease.…”

“…In a study of 275 patients who were using Acuseal graft for HD, Acuseal provided early cannulation at 72 hours without any complications. 10 No excessive bleeding or hematoma was reported in these patients. The primary patency rates at 12 months were also similar to standard grafts.…”

“…Acuseal was approved by Food and Drug Administration in 2013 for early cannulation. In a study of 275 patients who were using Acuseal graft for HD, Acuseal provided early cannulation at 72 hours without any complications . No excessive bleeding or hematoma was reported in these patients.…”

“…Some AVG may have benefited from the placement of an "early access" graft, which could justify a time to first use of < 15 days. However, "early access" grafts still comprise a small percentage of all prosthetic grafts placed 2012-2014, likely due to marginal performance and slow patient and provider adoption curves [22].…”
