“…Brazil has been one of the first countries to have medical training programs in geriatrics since the late 1970s, yet there is still only one geriatrician for every 37,000 older people. A few years ago, a paper published by the Latin American Academy of Medicine for the Elderly (ALMA; Cano et al, 2005) launched a proposal recommending the minimum content to be adopted by medical schools in the region. The inclusion of this content in the curriculum would allow all medical graduates to develop the skills needed to serve the growing number of older people receiving treatment from primary care clinics.…”

“…The expert group emphasized the need and urgency of the medical student to have minimal knowledge of geriatrics, including specific aspects such as demography, physiology of aging, physical examination and medical history of the elderly, pharmacology, frailty, rehabilitation, the importance of interdisciplinary work, particular knowledge of the terminal patient, and active aging among other geriatric concepts. This article considered the minimum time necessary to achieve these educational goals was 46 hours and the ideal theoretical time was 62 hours, which should be complemented by practical activities in the hospital wards treating geriatric patients (Cano et al, 2005).…”
