Proposed light sources for illuminating in Xuan paper and silk artwork with organic and inorganic pigments by evaluating color shifts in museum

Abstract: Artworks based on Xuan paper or silk and painted by organic or inorganic pigments are highly responsive to light due to their materials and manufacturing technologies. They belong to the highest level of light responsive exhibits stipulated by International Commission on Illumination (CIE) and are vulnerable to fading and discoloration caused by radiation from light sources. The choice of light sources is the key of protection for artworks. It is indispensible and urgent to choose the lowest damage light sourc… Show more

“…CIE 1976 L * a * b * Uniform color space is widely used in the research of cultural relic aging. In this study, 8 we measure the chromatic information of samples periodically, and then use CIE 1976 L * a * b * uniform color space to obtain the color difference of samples in different aging periods.…”

“…Through analyzing the color difference value, the influence coefficient of various light sources on painting was obtained by them, and then the best light source for Chinese light color painting lighting was determined 6 . Through detailed experiments, Dang Rui and his team explored the light sources suitable for Xuan paper and silk artwork lighting; they also studied the influence of light source band on polychrome 7,8 . By setting up relevant experiments, Soomin Jo et al studied the relationship between different colors of light and Korean cultural relics damage 9 .…”
