As automated driving has not yet been established, on narrow roads where there is no separation between pedestrians and vehicles, it is essential to switch to manual driving. However, when the driver turns the steering wheel from one hand to another on narrow roads, it causes steering burdens and operational errors if the steering feel or burden is not proper. Thus, this study aims to construct an active steering wheel system that provides an appropriate steering feel or burden by controlling the steering reaction torque, driving position and steering gear ratio for each driver. In this paper, we focused on and examined the driving position among these. A two-dimensional steering model that considers the size of the arms for each driver was established to evaluate steering burden. In addition, a basic study was conducted on the appropriate driving position. Then, based on the joint movements and angles calculation, the appropriate driving position that considers the size of the arms was studied by evaluating the joint power. As a result, it was found that if the steering wheel position is too close to the driver, the amount of joint movement increases, and if it is too far away, the joint movement decreases. Therefore, it was found that the appropriate steering wheel position for each driver’s arm length can be considered by using the joint power.

In previous study it was confirmed that changing of grip position counteracts drivers' maintenance of appropriate steering angle. Therefore, we developed the bar type steering system with low steering gear ratio. In high-speed driving, the range of steering angles used is smaller than in low-speed driving. with a steering system with a low gear ratio, further delicate steering is required. Human operation resolving ability is insufficient for such operation, it is expected that high-speed driving at a low gear ratio will become difficult. Motorcycles enable high-speed driving even at a low gear ratio. In motorcycles, a sufficiently large torque occurs during high-speed driving. Referring to this, we developed a steering system that enables easy high-speed operation at a low gear ratio from the viewpoint of vehicle behavior including both steering angle and steering torque. As the result, the difficulty of steering operation with low steering gear ratio at high speed was improved by adjusting steering reaction torque of bar type steering. Furthermore, the dynamic characteristics from the steering torque to the vehicle was examined. As result, where a large steering torque is required, the driver drives mainly based on the steering torque. Therefore, the ease of driving does not change if the phase of steering torque is delayed from the steering angle. On the other hand, the experiment confirmed that driving becomes difficult if the yaw rate is delayed from the steering torque that the driver relies on. We designed reactive torque control system to improve maneuverability and verify performance of the system by using driving simulator. Here, we report the maneuverability of bar type steering in high speed range.

This study aims to develop a new steering system that can help increase the ease of driving and reduce the driver"s mental workload during low-speed driving. First, the problems associated with low-speed driving were investigated. It was found that the act of changing the steering grip is one of the major factors that increase the workload. Therefore, it a new steering system, which eliminates the need of changing the steering grip, should be developed. A preliminary lab experiment was conducted to determine the specifications for the new steering system. Resultantly, it was found that hassle-free low-speed driving can be performed by changing the directions of the driver"s arm motions and form of the steering grip, which are the characteristics of a conventional steering system. Therefore, we decided the bar type steering as a proposal system which changed them. A driving simulator experiment was conducted to compare the differences between conventional steering system and the proposed steering system. It was also found that the proposed steering system has a lower driver gain and higher time constant in comparison with a conventional steering system. The proposed steering system enables a hassle-free driving experience, even with a low steering ratio. Finally, an experiment with test subject drivers in a real car was conducted to evaluate the compatibility between the proposed steering system and real car. Furthermore, it was found that the proposed steering system was easy to drive with, even for drivers with no previous driving experience.
