Proposal of New Steering System Considering the Direction of Upper Limb Motion

Abstract: This paper describes a proposal of new steering system which can provide easy and safe operation of vehicle to all drivers. We attached a steering bar as a new steering system instead of conventional steering wheel. We conduct preliminary experiment with steering bar, steering wheel and steering wheel of high gain by the driving simulator. As a result, it is proved that operating by steering bar have advantage of tracking performance and smoothly control. After that, proposal and conventional input system was … Show more

“…Because they have a small turning circle, these vehicles are mainly used on narrow roads, in which there is no separation between pedestrians and vehicles. At low speeds on narrow roads, when the driver switches the steering wheel from one hand to another, it causes extensive shoulder burden and a sense of loss of turning direction, making it difficult for inexperienced drivers to control the vehicle [1]. Therefore, a system that controls the steering gear ratio, which is the ratio of the steering wheel operating angle to the steering angle of the tires, is required.…”

“…Among driving skills, changing of steering grip position, which occurs while driving at a low speed, is said to be a particularly difficult skill. (Kitahara et al, 2013) In the initial stage of developing the steering wheel, the steering torque during low-speed driving was reduced by a large steering gear ratio. Therefore, the driver was required to operate the steering wheel at large angles at low speeds.…”

“…However, it is reported that if a low gear ratio is set while using a steering wheel, the driver cannot drive well, and, as a result, the vehicle meanders. (Kitahara et al, 2013) For such reasons, we have proposed a bar-type steering system to enable easy driving at a low gear ratio. (Tamakawa et al, 2015) By using this steering system, even a driver with little driving experience is able to steer intuitively and therefore drive the vehicle just as he or she wants.…”
