“…The postulated mechanisms by which prebiotics decrease yolk cholesterol might be attributed to the production of short‐chain fatty acids (SCFA), upon fermentation by the probiotic organisms (Hara and others ) and the deconjugation and fecal excretion of bile acids due to the stimulation of growth of probiotics that occurs because prebiotics are the food sources of probiotics (Shang and others ). SCFA has been proposed to be able to suppress hepatic cholesterol synthesis (Hara and others ) and to stimulate bile acid synthesis (Imaizumi and others ). Synbiotics have been suggested to have the ability to alter the pathways of cholesteryl esters and lipoprotein transporters (Liong and others ), which might reduce the availability of cholesterol for deposition into egg yolks.…”

“…24 ) GOS produced a significant hypocholesterolemic effect in the OVX rats. Imaizumi et al 25 ) have reported that propionic acid enhanced the in vitro synthesis and secretion of bile acids by hepatocytes via the elevation of its metabolite, succinyl CoA. Chen et al 7 ) also reported that feeding propionic acid to rats decreased the serum cholesterol level.…”

“…The mechanism underlying the cholesterol lowering effects of SCFA such as propionate includes the inhibition of cholesterol synthesizing enzyme (3-hydroxy 3-methylglutaryl CoA reductase) and redistribution of cholesterol from the blood plasma to the liver (Wright et al, 1990;Arora et al, 2011). Propionate can also improve the secretion and synthesis of bile acids, and cholesterol 7a hydroxylase activity in primary cultured rat hepatocytes by increasing mitochondrial succinyl CoA concentrations (Imaizumi et al, 1992;Levrat et al, 1994). Furthermore, addition of propionate and butyrate to Caco-2 cell lines trigger downregulation of genes involved in the intestinal cholesterol synthesis pathway (Alvaro et al, 2008).…”
