“…A single clinical trial on a further protection of radiogenic sialadenitis and mucositis by coumarin/troxerutine was also reported by Grotz et al (10). Among the so-called preemptive drugs, pilocarpin has gained ground, not only in experimental studies (11) but in clinical trials as well (12,13).…”

“…The RTOG salivary gland score for late radiation effects was recorded [9]. Sialometry was performed in accordance with the method described earlier [17] and used by other groups [7,8]. We collected stimulated saliva for 5 min in a quiet room outside the medical ambulance in the morning period between 09:00 a.m. and 01:00 p.m. To avoid additional discomfort for the patients when chemical stimulation with citric acid seemed to be impossible (ten cases), we used suggestion techniques to stimulate the flow.…”

“…The four-scale RTOG/EORTC rating by the physician seems to be too rough and not free of examiner's influence. The assessment of salivary flow rates is highly susceptible to methodological variances [6,8,17,20,21,29]. Patient ratings of xerostomia are considered to be too subjective to serve as primary endpoints in clinical studies [14].…”
