Prophylactic Residual Aneurysmal Sac Embolization with Expandable Hydrogel Embolic Devices for Endoleak Prevention: Preliminary Study in Dogs

Abstract: RAS embolization was feasible with the EHED, although additional modifications to the device are required to avoid complications. Angiographic and histologic results suggested that RAS embolization with the EHED may help in the prevention of endoleaks.

“…In one model, in addition to a modified aortic stent-graft, a non-cytotoxic polymer was employed consisting of 2 ml of n-butyl-2-cyanoacrylate-metacryloxysulpholane glue and ultrafluid lipiodol (ratio 20:80) [217]. In a similar model, an embolization of the residual AAA sac was proposed with an expandable hydrogel embolic device to prevent endoleaks [218]. “…While control animals demonstrated both type I and II endoleaks, none of the swines undergoing embolization showed any type of endoleaks [217]. The hydrogel was poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid), which is biodegradable and does not adhere to tissues [218]. The device consisted of a combination of hydrogel (for occlusion) and platinum wire or coil (for radiopacity and to aid in delivery).…”
