Prophylactic and Therapeutic Vaccines against Human Papillomavirus Infections

Abstract: Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are a large family of double-strand DNA viruses comprising more than 180 types. Infection with HPV is associated with benign and malignant proliferation of skin and mucosae. Low-risk HPVs produce warts, whereas high-risk viruses induce tumors. Because there are no anti-viral drugs for HPV infection, there is a lot of interest in vaccines that can prevent the infection and also in vaccines that can be used to treat established infections and HPV-related tumors. Two prophylactic vac… Show more

“…The cellular immune response plays an important role in eliminating HPV-infected cells. Activation of CTL plays an important role in the recognition of HPV antigens, especially E1 and E2, which are expressed at several stages of viral infection . In addition, CD4+ (HTL) activated by APCs differentiates into Th1, Th2, or Treg cells according to the cytokines produced.…”

“…Prophylactic vaccines aim to prevent infection by a pathogen, and thus protect the individual from future contact through immunological memory [29]. The application of prophylactic vaccines induces an adaptive immune response primarily focused on the humoral immune response [30].…”

Other treatments that have been used in some cases are chemo and radiotherapy, as well as topical treatments although the available bibliographic evidence is not conclusive regarding the systematic use of them, tending in general terms to be ineffective [12][13][14]. malignant cells and nucleoli prominent rosés with inclusion bodies in the epidermis (Figures 7-10).…”
