Property Oriented Wire Rolling Technology for Mg-Al Alloys

Abstract: Magnesium and magnesium alloys offer high potential as lightweight materials. Current works are mainly focused on the metal forming technologies and material development for sheet and strips to provide magnesium flat products for industrial applications. However, the technology for the production of magnesium long products for fasteners or other connecting elements is exclusive the extrusion process. A cost-efficient alternative can be the caliber rolling technology for magnesium rods and wire with regard to r… Show more

“…After twin-roll casting, the microstructure and the mechanical properties of the AZ31 alloy can be improved by wire rolling. There are just a few paper, which deal with wire rolling of magnesium alloys, especially AZ31 [7][8][9]. In all cases, wire rolling results in a finer microstructure, an improvement of the mechanical properties and an intensification of the texture.…”

“…Though, extrusion processes are limited in length and size as well as not applicable for a mass production due to a currently high magnesium price [1]. A large-scale application and a lower price for magnesium could be possible by means of calibre rolling because there are no limits to product length [3]. Further, rolling in calibre leads to a finer microstructure [7][8][9] and superior mechanical properties in comparison to conventional manufacturing routes [10].…”

“…As welding wire should correspond to the base material, a need for magnesium welding wires in form of different alloys arises as there are innovative development trends regarding wrought magnesium alloys for sheets and profiles [9]. Another potential field of application in the same sector are joining elements for magnesium components, e.g., magnesium bolts and screws [10].…”
