“…For example, V1317 and V/319 are found as pseudogenes in TCR B b haplotype and functional in TCR/3 ~ haplotype (3,4), and several strains display genomic deletions that remove up to 60% of their V/3s (5)(6)(7). Along with this variability of the germ-line repertoire, the usage of V/3s by mature T lymphocytes depends on MHC products and on the expression of superantigens that eliminate T cells bearing particular V/3s (8). “…Since it has been shown that Mlsa and Mls°determinants are encoded by nonallelic, unlinked loci based on segregation analysis (22), a new nomenclature has been proposed in which Mls-1 would represent the locus encoding Mlsa and Mls-2 would encode what was previously known as Mlsc (26)(27)(28). The findings described above indicate the existence of a third locus (Mls-3) that is involved in Mlsc expression (25,29). However, since the loci encoding Mls`determinants have not yet been mapped, and since it appears that two loci may encode a common determinant, we would suggest that Festenstein's original nomenclature (9) be maintained for Mls determinants as well as for Mls phenotypes Mlsa, Mlsb, and Mls`; Mlsd is now widely accepted to represent coexpression of Mlsa and Mls`determinants and can be discarded from use.…”
