Properties of Polyimide/Silica Nanohybrids from Silicic Acid Oligomer

Abstract: Summary: A new method to synthesize polyimide (PI)/silica nanohybrids has been presented. It uses silicic acid oligomer as the silica precursor, which was obtained by extracting with tetrahydrofuran (THF) from PH‐adjusted water glass. The films of PI/silica nanohybrids remained transparent even at high silica content due to the formation of nanometer‐scaled SiO2 particles at the addition of γ‐aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES). In comparison with pure PI, PI/silica hybrids showed improved thermal stability and… Show more

“…Thirdly, it is difficult to realize the bending and flexibility of large curvature due to the structural characteristics of the inorganic material. Finally, the poor corrosion resistance to acid and alkali limits its application in some special fields [21][22][23].…”

“…For example, fluorination can impart the resulting fluorinated polyamides with the decreased dielectric constants because of the lower polarizability of fluorine [9][10][11] . On the other hand, the polyimide/SiO2 composites have been found to exhibit the good thermal properties 12,13 , low humidity absorption 14 , decreased dielectric constant 15 and improved optical properties 16 . More importantly, the introduction of silica into polyimide films could increase the hydrophobicity, reducing the humidity absorption with a lower dielectric constant reached 17 .…”
