“…Under air, the reaction mixture remained brown throughout and after the synthesis (see Figure S7 for photographs). Reports in the literature suggest that a colorless or yellow solution is indicative of a Ce(OH) 3 or Ce 2 O 3 composition, purple suggests a mixed-valence phase, and brown is consistent with a Ce(III)-rich CeO 2– x material. Our observations regarding the color changes observed, as well as the XPS and XRD data, are consistent with these literature reports. The XPS data suggest that the nanoribbons are predominantly a Ce(III) phase, likely a mixture of bixbyite Ce 2 O 3 and fluorite CeO 2 based upon the XRD data.…”

“…The XRD spectra of the NC particles shows characteristic peaks at 2θ = 33.12°, 55.76°, 69.87°, and 82.7°, which can be indexed as the (200), (311), (400), and (420) planes, respectively (Figure 3A); these results are in agreement with previously published reports. 51,52 In the case of the neat PVA hydrogel, a broad peak between 2θ = 20−25°is assigned to the polymer matrix. The broadness of the peak indicates the amorphous nature of the polymer, which is in agreement with previously published reports.…”
