Properties of ionic liquids on Au surfaces: non-conventional anion exchange reactions with carbonate

Abstract: A simple anion metathesis in diluted aqueous carbonate at room temperature affords 1-(12-mercaptododecyl)-3-methyl-imidazolium carbonate (MDMI-HCO(3)) from MDMI salts self-assembled on gold films and nanoparticles. The properties of MDMI-SAM differ from MDMI in solution, for which the anion exchange reaction does not proceed.

“…MS analysis provides molecular fingerprinting of the materials non-specifically adsorbed on various surface chemistries. Protein adsorption to surfaces is well-documented for serum-based analysis. Because non-specific adsorption from cell lysate has never been analyzed by MS, the interaction between the peptide SAMs and cell lysate must be investigated. Non-specifically adsorbed proteins were analyzed after SAM trypsin digestion of the proteins.…”

“…Matrix deposition was performed by successive evaporation of 0.5 lL of matrix solution on the digested spots to analyze proteins and beside the digested spots for lipid analysis. MS analysis of the adsorbed material was performed with a MALDIÀTOF/TOF mass spectrometer (Bruker Daltonics, Bremen, Germany) as previously described (Ratel et al, 2011).…”

“…182 Ionic liquid SAM undergoes unexpected anion exchange with carbonate when immobilized to SPR sensors. 183 They can be synthesized with a carboxylic acid group, which would be available for immobilizing a bioreceptor. 183 Ionic liquids are zwitterionic and thus may provide good resistance to nonspecific adsorption.…”
