Properties of flat‐pressed wood plastic composites containing fire retardants

Abstract: This study investigated physical, mechanical, and fire properties of the flat-pressed wood plastic composites (WPCs) incorporated with various fire retardants (FRs) [5 or 15% by weight (wt)] at 50 wt % of the wood flour (WF). The WPC panels were made from dryblended WF, polypropylene (PP) with maleic anhydridegrafted PP (2 wt %), and FR powder formulations using a conventional flat-pressing process under laboratory conditions. The water resistance and strength values of the WPC panels were negatively affected … Show more

“…Composites containing flame retardants, aluminum hydroxide and 1,2-bis(pentabromophenyl) ethane, retained more than 90% of their original MOE values compared with that of control composites. This result is in agreement with the common trend of WF-reinforced plastics [4,5]. This could be attributed to the decrease of compatibility among flame retardants, HDPE and WF.…”

“…One strategy used to acquire fire resistance for WPC is the incorporation of fire retardants during processing, such as extrusion, compression, and injection molding. Much research has been focused on phosphorous compound flame retardants . Compared with that of control WPC, the intumescent char layer was formed with the addition of flame‐retardant ammonium polyphosphate (APP), and thus a better fire performance was achieved .…”

“…WPCs fire retardancy is critical, because most WPCs are quite highly flammable. Although domestic and foreign scholars have conducted a wealth of research work on the antistatic properties of virgin plastic and the fire retardancy of WPCs , relatively limited academic research exists on WPCs antistatic properties combined with fire retardancy.…”

“…Wood plastic composites (WPCs) have received considerable attention over the past years due to their improved mechanical property, low processing cost, and biological performance. WPCs have been used in increasingly widespread applications, including siding, roofing, windows, door frames, and outdoor furniture industry . A lot of studies were conducted to investigate fire‐retarding, smoke‐inhibiting, structure‐strengthening, water‐proof, decay‐resistant, and microbe‐inhibiting property of WPCs, but thermal properties of WPC have been studied rarely.…”
