One new and one established functional cyclooctene were prepared and (co)polymerized using ring-opening metathesis polymerization. The resulting polymers were hydrogenated to yield the corresponding functional polyolefins that were structurally equivalent to copolymers of ethylene and either methyl methacrylate, t-butyl acrylate, or acrylic acid after deprotection. The copolymers that incorporate methyl methacrylate into the backbone were used as compatibilizers for poly(methyl methacrylate)/polyethylene blends. Many 3-substituted COEs provide regiospecific polymers 1 while 4-and 5-substituted COEs typically give regioirregular polymers. The broad utility of this approach to materials useful for a wide variety of interesting applications has been clearly demonstrated in the literature. [2][3][4] The success of these approaches can be in large part attributed to the robust nature of ruthenium-based metathesis catalysts developed by Robert H. Grubbs and coworkers. Reported is realization of a novel ionic electroactive biomimetic soft robotic polymer metal nanocomposite known as poly (ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) metal composite (called EMAMC in this paper) capable of functioning as soft robotic biomimetic actuators, energy harvesters and sensors. By soft robotic it is meant that these materials are easily deformable soft plastics like an elephant trunk. Further reported is the manufacturing methodology of the novel multi-functional electroactive polymer metal nanocomposite EMAMC. The electro-less chemical plating is performed by a chemical REDOX operation on poly (ethylene-co-methacrylic acid) or (PEMAA) ionomer with a metal. PEMAA is a commercially available ionomer commercially known as Surlyn Ò by DuPont and used for manufacturing golf balls. Surlyn Ò is a copolymer of ethylene and methacrylic acid groups and is partially neutralized with Na ? ions. To increase the ion exchange capability of Surlyn Ò the polymer is subjected to a chemical hydrolysis in potassium and sodium hydroxides (KOH, NaOH) and dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). This procedure is followed by a chemical REDOX procedure in which PEMAA is first oxidized in a metallic salt solution followed and then reduced in a lithium and sodium borohydride solutions to deposit metallic nanoparticles near boundaries and on the surfaces of hydrolyzed Surlyn Ò . This REDOX operation creates highly conductive electrodes on and near boundary surfaces. It is then observed that application of a low voltage across the EMAMC causes it to deform softly (actuation mode) with a significant force density and soft bending and deforming the EMAMC will generate electricity (energy harvesting and sensing modes). The preliminary results of actuation and sensing of the EMAMC are reported in this paper.

The glass transition in styrene‐based ionomers was investigated by means of infrared spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Transition temperatures were determined from the temperature dependence of the peak absorbances of the 1700 and 1745 cm−1 bands. These transition temperatures agreed with glass transition temperatures (Tg) determined by DSC. With increasing degree of ionization, Tg and the enthalpy ΔH of the residual intermolecular hydrogen bonding increased. The values of Tg obtained were analyzed by the theory of Fox and Loshaek for the effect of crosslinks. It is concluded that sodium ions probably from ionic domains and act as crosslinks to reinforce the residual hydrogen bonding and may increase Tg. The absorbance at 1560 cm−1 (νCOO−) did not change at Tg. This suggests that the glass transition observed here is not due to the onset of the mobility in ionic domains, as has been proposed for ethylene‐based ionomers on the basis of dielectric measurements.
