Properties and Composition of Absolutized Ethanol and its Effect on the Gasoline Octane Number

Abstract: The article describes the types, properties and efficiency of reagents (CaO, tetraethoxytitanium), which chemically bind water and dehydrate ethanol. The composition and properties of the absolutized ethanol were studied using the infrared spectroscopy, mass spectroscopy and gas-liquid chromatography. The octane number of gasoline with the addition of absolutized ethanol together with the combustion activator (diethyl ether) was measured as well. It has been shown that the content of even very small amounts (u… Show more

“…It was determined that the octane number of gasoline A-80 with the addition of 20-90% of the absolutized ethanol containing 2.34% of the combustion activator-diethyl ether-increases gasoline octane number more significantly than with the addition of the same amount of an ordinary absolute 99.95% alcohol without diethyl ether and reaches 95-97 U, whereas the octane number of gasoline with ordinary absolute ethanol reaches only 88-95 U. We confirmed literary data that the content of even very small amounts of ethers, as combustion activators, combined with the absolute ethyl alcohol leads to an improvement in the gasoline running abilities [45].…”

“…As can be seen in the mass spectrogram of non-absolutized 95% ethyl alcohol (Figure 6a), radical composition of the impurity is formed by the electron action of the mass spectrometer, there can be three types of free radicals with molecular weights such as 32.01 m.u. 3) [44,45].…”

“…Therefore, by studying the kinetics of decomposition of ethanol and acetaldehyde, it is possible to determine the influence of some components of coffee on this process [8]. With the help of Alcofor-105 breathalyzer, we carried out a preliminary analysis of exhaled air samples after taking a dose of alcohol, during the metabolism of ethyl alcohol in the human body, by following the concentration of the alcohol in exhalation [15]. Thus, given the above results, we can draw the following conclusions:…”

“…The reaction is carried out using an alkaline homogeneous catalyst. The use of bioethanol in the biodiesel production is rather difficult, since absolute ethanol must be used [3], but in this case, the main reagents for the biodiesel synthesis are natural renewable sources. Despite the fact that the cost of ethanol is higher, its use has some advantages such as better mixing than methanol and being less toxic [4].…”

“…The use of ethyl esters of long-chain fatty acids of rapeseed oil as biodiesel has a number of advantages compared with the methyl ester use [2]. Thus, biodiesel fuel was synthesized by transesterification of rapeseed oil with absolute ethanol (99.9 %), which was dehydrated with calcium oxide (95 %) freshly prepared, using sodium ethoxide as a catalyst [3]. In order to achieve a high degree of mixing of a heterogeneous system, which consists of natural oil and ethyl alcohol, a specially synthesized non-ionic emulsifier was used as a reagent.…”
