There is a good deal of current interest in the condensate < A a µ A µ a > which has been seen to play an important role in calculations which make use of the operator product expansion.That development has led to the publication of a large number of papers which discuss how that condensate could play a role in a gauge-invariant formulation. In the present work we consider gluon propagation in the presence of such a condensate which we assume to be present in the vacuum. We show that the gluon propagator has no on-mass-shell pole and, therefore, a gluon cannot propagate over extended distances. That is, the gluon is a nonpropagating mode in the gluon condensate. In the present work we discuss the properties of both the Euclidean-space and Minkowski-space gluon propagator. In the case of the Euclidean-space propagator we can make contact with the results of QCD lattice calculations of the propagator in the Landau gauge. With an appropriate choice of normalization constants, we present a unified representation of the gluon propagator that describes both the Minkowski-space and Euclidean-space dynamics in which the < A a µ A µ a > condensate plays an important role.

The study of light pseudoscalar quark-antiquark bound states in the Dyson-Schwinger approach with the effective QCD coupling enhanced by the interplay of the dimension 2 gluon condensate A 2 and dimension 4 gluon condensate F 2 , is extended to the η-η ′ complex. We include the effects of the gluon axial anomaly into the Dyson-Schwinger approach to mesons. The calculated masses, mixing and two-photon decay widths of η and η ′ mesons are in agreement with experiment. Also, in a model-independent way, we give the modification of the Gell-Mann-Okubo and Schwinger nonet relations due to the interplay of the gluon anomaly and SU(3) flavor symmetry breaking.

Abstract. An outline is given of an extended perturbative solution of Euclidean QCD which systematically accounts for a class of nonperturbative effects, while still allowing renormalization by the perturbative counterterms. Euclidean proper vertices F are approximated by a double sequence F [r'pJ, where r denotes the degree of rational approximation with respect to the spontaneous mass scale AQCD, nonanalytic in the coupling g 2, while p represents the order of perturbative corrections in {]2 calculated from F rr'~ -rather than from the perturbative Feynman rules F (~ -as a starting point. The mechanism allowing the nonperturbative terms to reproduce themselves in the Dyson-Schwinger equations preserves perturbative renormalizability and is intimately tied to the divergence structure of the theory. As a result, it restricts the self-consistency problem for the F [r'~ rigorously -i.e. without decoupling approximations -to the seven superficially divergent vertices. An interesting aspect of the solution is that rational-function sequences for the QCD propagators contain subsequences describing short-lived elementary excitations. The method is calculational, in that it allows the known techniques of loop computation to be used while dealing with integrands of truly nonperturbative content.
