Propagation of Spreading Cortical Depression

Abstract: Cortical Spreading Depression (CSD) is a disruption of the brain he-mostasis that, originating in the visual cortex and traveling towards the frontal lobe, temporarily impairs the normal functioning of neurons. Although , as of today, little is known about the mechanisms that can trigger or stop such phenomenon, CSD is commonly accepted as a correlate of migraine visual aura. In this paper, we introduce a multiscale PDE-ODE model that couples the propagation of the depolarization wave associated to CSD with a … Show more

“…In sequence he published another paper, in the same year, with focus on the vasodilatation accompanying SD 6 . Before leaving back to Brazil, he submitted, together with Robert S. Morison, the "Propagation of spreading cortical depression", published in 1945 7 . Later, his first international paper developed in his Brazilian laboratory (1947) appeared 8 .…”

“…The analogies between the timing of CSD spreading and that of the progressively expanding visual aura prompted Leao, who firstly described this phenomenon in 1944 [1][2][3], to raise the hypothesis that CSD could be the neurophysiologic correlate of the migrainous aura. Despite the conspicuous research efforts, the first strong evidence of a causative relationship between CSD and MA only arrived in 1981 [4].…”

“…Este fenômeno foi denominado "depressão alastrante", ou "spreading depression of Leão". Como a velocidade de propagação da DA era semelhante à velocidade de propagação do fenômeno cortical que Lashley observara, Leão sugeriria posteriormente que a DA poderia estar relacionada à fisiopatologia da enxaqueca 40 .…”
