Propagation of Measurement-While-Drilling Mud Pulse during High Temperature Deep Well Drilling Operations

Abstract: Signal attenuates while Measurement-While-Drilling (MWD) mud pulse is transmited in drill string during high temperature deep well drilling. In this work, an analytical model for the propagation of mud pulse was presented. The model consists of continuity, momentum, and state equations with analytical solutions based on the linear perturbation analysis. The model can predict the wave speed and attenuation coefficient of mud pulse. The calculated results were compared with the experimental data showing a good a… Show more

“…As seen in Figure 2, 1 was the length from the origin to the bottomhole, and 2 was the length from the origin to the wellhead. By calculating the velocity of two phases flow, the new model for surge pressure in gas-drilling mud two-phase during the movement of drill pipe can be deduced [36].…”

“…Another mode of electromagnetic telemetry realizes the signal transmission through small loop coils based on the electromagnetic wave coupling effect. A high-speed data transmission intelligent service system based on electromagnetic induction coupling has been produced by Hall et al 16 and other researchers, 17,18 which allows the system to realize noncontact communication through the coupling of two coils at the drill pipe joint. This approach can realize signal transmission in 20–30 drill pipes without using relay pipes.…”

“…At present, the ultrasonic ranging has been widely used in various occasions, such as car reversing, ocean survey, object recognition, industrial automatic control, construction engineering measurement and robot vision recognition, etc. [9,10,11] This paper takes STC89C52 SCM as the center control unit, and implements that there will form echo signal when ultrasonic launching and encountering obstacles occur reflection, and according to the propagation velocity of ultrasonic in the medium and the time difference from launching to receiving the echo, calculate the distance from the start to the obstacles, to accomplish the design object.…”
