Propagation from cuttings of two woody ornamental Australian shrubs, Boronia megastigma Nees (brown boronia) and Hypocalymma angustifolium Endl. (white myrtle)

Abstract: Summary. While many woody plant cuttings respond to propagation conditions in similar ways, results presented here indicate that some responses are species specific. Propagation of Boronia megastigma and Hypocalymma angustifolium cuttings was successful except when cuttings were struck without auxin treatment in a pinebark-based propagation medium. More stem H. angustifolium cuttings (100%) produced roots than terminal (shoot tip) cuttings (45.2%). Benzyladenine and gibberellic acid treatment of stock plants d… Show more

“…The shrub is native to Mexico, South America and the Caribbean (Okunlola, 2013). D. erecta plays a significant role in environmental beautification and management; making public parks, gardens and houses more conducive for relaxation and enjoyment as an ornamental plant (Day and Loveys, 1998;Said, 2016). D. erecta increases the economic value of a property if properly placed in a landscape it can provide practical solutions for physical site problems with their durable aesthetic satisfaction (Okunlola, 2013).…”

“…The significant (P≤0.01) combined effect of genotype by cutting interaction on days to opening of apical bud and shoot development gave an insight of the selection of right physiological age of cuttings for the propagation of different genotypes (Table 3). Success of rooting of woody stem cuttings, in the majority of ornamental plants and fruit trees depends mainly on the physiological stage of the mother plant (Day and Loveys, 1998).…”

“…Based on Table 2, semihardwood cuttings showed significant performance compared to seedlings and softwood cuttings. Previously, [9] and [10] concluded that in the most ornamental plants, the success of woody stem cuttings depends on types of cutting, environmental conditions and species rooted. In this experiment, semi-woody cuttings produced the highest plant and vigorous branch and leaves.…”
