Propagation by Stem Cuttings of Tropaeolum pentaphyllum Lam. (Crem): An Alternative for Production of Seed Tubers

Abstract: The herbaceous vine Tropaeolum pentaphyllum Lam. (Tropaeolaceae), popularly known as crem, has great potential for use, especially its tubers. However, there is still a lack of studies regarding this species. The objective of this study was to test the viability of propagation by stem cuttings for the production of T. pentaphyllum seed tubers. Two experiments were carried out in a greenhouse under controlled conditions. In both experiments, experimental design was completely randomized. In the first one, five … Show more

“…Thus, germination can be used aiming at the propagation of the species (production of seedtubers), as well as to expand the genetic diversity in crops of T. pentaphyllum. Another propagation form that can be used to produce seed-tubers is the cutting of aerial stem with tuber formation of most 45% [14].…”

“…The propagation of this species is through of planting of "seedtubers", which have no standard size [13]. Another form of production of seed tubers is by stem cuttings [14]. It is also possible to propagate this species through seeds, but there are difficulties in germination [5].…”

“…Cuttings should be placed into a rich organic substrate such a Moorland Gold peat alternative compost and should be kept lightly moist in a closed propagator with good humidity until rooting occurs. On average cuttings should root within 3–5 months producing small tubers before the top growth begins to die back as usual (Balestrin et al, 2021).…”

“…megepetalum and pentaphyllum ) grown at RBG, Kew, the third method (from cuttings) is a relatively recent technique applied to glasshouse grown material (albeit in Brazil), of subsp. pentaphyllum (Balestrin et al, 2021). All three methods are discussed below since it is likely that all three subspecies have a high agricultural potential and propagation by cuttings would preclude continuously collecting tubers from the wild as a food and condiment source.…”
