Propagating Dam Breach Parametric Uncertainty in a River Reach Using the HEC-RAS Software

Abstract: Dam break studies consist of two submodels: a) the dam breach submodel which derives the flood hydrograph and b) the hydrodynamic submodel which, using the flood hydrograph, derives the flood peaks and maximum water depths in the downstream reaches of the river. In this paper, a thorough investigation of the uncertainty observed in the output of the hydrodynamic model, due to the seven dam breach parameters, is performed in a real-world case study (Papadiana Dam, located at Tavronitis River in Crete, Greece). … Show more

“…The models for simulating the behaviour to external destabilizing factors of territorial systems are necessary in order to make the best decision based on the analysis of the results obtained from the simulation [48,49]. In the present study, based on the results analysis of the three simulations, it was decided that the implementation of hydro-amelioration work in simulation 3 is the best implementable technical solution for introducing a relative stability in the analysed system.…”

“…Overall, Froehlich's methods showed good results in the field. They remained the best methods in this field, given the high number of real dam failure cases (63) used while predicting dam breach parameters, and because they are the most suitable for earthen dams [65]. The methods offered by Froehlich (1995Froehlich ( , 2008 distinctly had the best prediction performance in the uncertainty analysis (Table 1).…”

“…The breach flood hydrograph was created using the dam breach option within the 2D HEC-RAS model. The outflow hydrograph due to the breaching failure can be derived using the weir equation as [20]:…”
