Proof of concept for lightweight PUF-based authentication protocol using NodeMCU ESP8266

Abstract: Wireless sensor node is the foundation for building the next generation of ubiquitous networks or the so-called internet of things (IoT). Each node is equipped with sensing, computing devices, and a radio transceiver. Each node is connected to other nodes via a wireless sensor network (WSN). Examples of WSN applications include health care monitoring, and industrial monitoring. These applications process sensitive data, which if disclosed, may lead to unwanted implications. Therefore, it is crucial to provide … Show more

“…The system is designed to monitor LPG pressure. The NodeMCU microcontroller [8], [9], [33]- [36] then processes the pressure value from the LPG cylinder read by the pressure sensor. If the pressure value in Figure 3 is 5 psi, then the green LED indicator on the Blynk application lights up.…”

“…The public can also monitor something without looking directly at it. The internet of things (IoT) [4]- [8] works by utilizing a programming argument, where each program command can produce an interaction between the microcontroller and other devices [4], [5], [7], [9], [10]. IoT devices have been automatically connected without human intervention and without regard for distance [3], [11]- [13].…”

“…The ESP8266 module is one type of Internet of Things (IoT) device. IoT can be defined as the ability of multiple devices or things to communicate and connect with each other, exchanging data through the internet network (Macheso et al, 2022;Msekh & Msekh, 2022;Mispan et al, 2021). The ESP8266 microcontroller module is equipped with a processor, memory, and GPIO device, with the number of pins depending on the specific type of ESP8266 used (Sutikno et al, 2021).…”

“…Hence, before the exchange messages occur, the sensor nodes must be authenticated by the sink to ensure their authenticity. WSN can be developed using NodeMCU ESP8266 devices [19], [20]. Therefore, in this study, we design a computational model of PUF in NodeMCU ESP8266 using an artificial neural network (ANN) to enable the lightweight authentication protocol development in WSN.…”
