is predominantly prescribed as the primary English learning model at every educational level in Taiwan and limited attention is paid to other accents of English. It is therefore the intention of this paper to investigate whether Taiwanese EFL learners have difficulties understanding British English after years of instruction in American English, and to identify differences between learners' attitudes towards these two varieties of English. EFL learners from two universities were randomly assigned to American and British English groups and required to listen to short texts recorded with either American or British accent. An independent simple t-test showed that no significant differences were found in listening comprehension scores, but responses on questionnaires revealed significant differences in attitudes towards American and British English. The influence of long-term instruction in American English was evidenced. Based on these findings, suggestions are provided for English language teaching in Taiwan and implications are drawn for the concept of English as an International Language (EIL), that in order to pursue successful international communication with people of various native languages, EFL learners need to experience various accents of English.

Numerous studies have been conducted to ascertain the relationship between the first language (L1) and the second/foreign language (L2). However, it is unclear how vowels and consonants affect how a foreign language speaker pronounces Indonesian. Thus, the objective of this study was to ascertain the vowels and consonants of the Indonesian language that were incorrectly and correctly pronounced by Lao men and Japanese women. This study is descriptive qualitative in nature. Following data collection via audio recording, the collected data were analysed using a contrastive analysis. The study's findings indicate that certain speech sounds are both mispronounced and well-pronounced. The speech sounds /i/, /u/, /e/, /ə/, /a/, /p/, /b/, /m/, /d/, /n/, /r/, /l/, /t/, /h/, and /k/ were mispronounced by the Japanese participants; however, the speech sounds /i/, /u/, /ə/, /a/, /ʤ/, /n/, /t/, /g/, /p/, /k/, /r/, and /h/ were not pronounced correctly by the Lao participants.

This study presents research which was conducted under the auspices of the PhD program in Applied Linguistcs at the Language Studies Institute (IEL) of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP) between the years 2003 and 2007. Following a qualitative approach, the research investigated how gender issues are dealt with in EFL textbooks. The investigation was carried out through the analysis of gender representations, with the objective of identifying ideological discourses conveyed by these representations, their influence on classroom discourses of teachers and students, and the relation between those discourses and gendered discourses circulating in Brazilian society. The corpus of our analysis was made up of six series of Brazilian EFL textbooks for the elementary level, five classes which were observed and registered in state schools of the city of Anápolis, state of Goiás, Center-Western region of Brazil, four interviews with learners, each interview being with two boys and two girls, and four interviews with teachers, three women and one man.Our analysis of the texts was oriented by the principles of critical discourse analysis (CDA), enriched in what refers to the concept of text as a combination of different semiotic codes in order to construct meaning, in this context being considered its written and visual aspects. In our field research we took into account the context of circulation and reception of texts, that is, the agency of the subjects involved in the process of interpretation of these texts in the classroom environment. We came to the conclusion that gender representations in the analyzed textbooks present ideological discourses which reinforce and legitimate gendered discourses circulating in society and these discourses are reproduced and/or opposed in classroom discourses of teachers and students.
