This review aims to give a general overview of the recent use of tungsten-based catalysts for wide environmental applications, with first some useful background information about tungsten oxides. Tungsten oxide materials exhibit suitable behaviors for surface reactions and catalysis such as acidic properties (mainly Brønsted sites), redox and adsorption properties (due to the presence of oxygen vacancies) and a photostimulation response under visible light (2.6–2.8 eV bandgap). Depending on the operating condition of the catalytic process, each of these behaviors is tunable by controlling structure and morphology (e.g., nanoplates, nanosheets, nanorods, nanowires, nanomesh, microflowers, hollow nanospheres) and/or interactions with other compounds such as conductors (carbon), semiconductors or other oxides (e.g., TiO2) and precious metals. WOx particles can be also dispersed on high specific surface area supports. Based on these behaviors, WO3-based catalysts were developed for numerous environmental applications. This review is divided into five main parts: structure of tungsten-based catalysts, acidity of supported tungsten oxide catalysts, WO3 catalysts for DeNOx applications, total oxidation of volatile organic compounds in gas phase and gas sensors and pollutant remediation in liquid phase (photocatalysis).

ZrO 2 -TiO 2 mixed oxides with different contents of TiO 2 were prepared by a co-precipitation method, which were used as the carrier material of CeO 2 -WO 3 /ZrO 2 -TiO 2 catalysts. The influence of doping TiO 2 on NH 3 -SCR activity and reaction path of CeO 2 -WO 3 /ZrO 2 was systematically investigated by several techniques, including N 2 -physisorption, XRD, H 2 -TPR, XPS, NO x -TPD, NH 3 -TPD, and in situ DRIFTS. The activity result suggested that the CeO 2 -WO 3 /ZrO 2 -TiO 2 with 0.20 g/g TiO 2 exhibited the optimal NH 3 -SCR performance, its operational temperature window was broadened about 55 8C from 254-445 8C of CeO 2 -WO 3 /ZrO 2 to 221-467 8C of CeO 2 -WO 3 /ZrO 2 -TiO 2 . The characterization results indicated that the reducibility of CeO 2 -WO 3 /ZrO 2 was obviously improved by adding TiO 2 into ZrO 2 , which could improve the low-temperature NH 3 -SCR activity. Besides, TiO 2 -doping enhanced the adsorption and activation of NH 3 , which played a positive role in NH 3 -SCR reaction. Finally, the results of in situ DRIFTS demonstrated that the NH 3 -SCR reaction route could be transferred from the Eley-Rideal mechanism over CeO 2 -WO 3 /ZrO 2 to the Langmuir-Hinshelwood mechanism over CeO 2 -WO 3 /ZrO 2 -TiO 2 at 250 8C.

To improve the combustion and emission characteristics of diesel engines, methanol-diesel fuels with different mixing ratios (DM0, DM10, DM20, DM30, and DM40) were used to investigate the effects of methanol addition on the combustion and emission of a four-stroke diesel engine in terms of cylinder pressure, brake power, brake-specific fuel consumption, and nitrogen oxides, soot, and carbon monoxide emissions. Firstly, an improved entire diesel engine model was developed using AVL-BOOST software and validated by the experimental results. The results showed that the increase of methanol content in the fuel mixture had a negative impact on the performance characteristic of the diesel engine, but significantly improved the emission characteristic of the diesel engine. With the methanol ratio in the mixed fuel increased to 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%, the cylinder pressure of the engine increased by 0.89%, 1.48%, 2.29%, and 3.17%, respectively. However, the power decreased by 3.76%, 6.74%, 11.35%, and 15.45%, the torque decreased by 3.76%, 6.74%, 11.35%, and 15.45%, respectively, and the brake specific fuel consumption increased by 3.77%, 6.92%, 12.33%, and 17.61%, respectively. In addition, with the methanol ratio in the mixed fuel increased to 10%, 20%, 30%, and 40%, the carbon monoxide emission decreased by 21.32%, 39.04%, 49.81%, and 56.59% and the soot emission decreased by 0.25%, 8.69%, 16.81%, and 25.28%, respectively. Therefore, the addition of methanol to the fuel can improve the combustion and emission characteristics of the engine.
