“…Autonomy was respected by affording participants the choice of either program and allowing them the freedom of attending group sessions as they desired and as their life circumstances allowed. Contextual factors that can impact participant experiences with lifestyle programs (Whybird, 2020) were similar; both programs were (a) facilitated by the same exercise physiologist so participants experienced the same supervision style and facilitator personality, (b) conducted in community facilities of a not‐for‐profit organisation which contributes to the program ‘environment’ and (c) conducted in groups with other people recovering from mental illness, so there was similar opportunity for social support and development of relatedness. Factors that may undermine the internalisation of health behaviour were avoided: (a) The exercise physiologist focused on behaviour change rather than meeting externalised goals such as weight loss and (b) Participants received a free gym membership (GYM) or free fitness tracker (MOT) which were not contingent on attendance or performance.…”
