Promoter hypermethylation of SOX11 correlates with adverse clinicopathological features of human prostate cancer

Abstract: Currently available tools for early diagnosis and prognosis of prostate cancer lack sufficient accuracy. There is a need to identify novel biomarkers for this common malignancy. SOX family genes play an important role in embryogenesis and are also implicated in various cancers. SOX11 has been recently recognized as a potential tumour suppressor that is downregulated in prostate cancer. We hypothesized that hypermethylation may be responsible for SOX11 silencing in human prostate cancer. The aim of the study wa… Show more

“…At the same time, enormous research is being carried out for the identification of novel and clinically efficient blood-based and urinary cancer biomarkers [ 56 , 57 , 58 ]. In this respect, a number of novel assay concepts have been reported that detect DNA hypermethylation, a characteristic trait of prostate cancer associated with the epigenetic silencing of key genes such as GST-Pi and SOX11 [ 59 , 60 , 61 , 62 ].…”

“…In addition, the loss of endogenous SOX5 expression attenuates the invasion and metastasis of gastric cancer cells, while overexpression of SOX5 signi cantly reverses these events [23]. Furthermore, other studies have pointed out that member proteins of SOX family detected in human cancer tissues, were served as potential molecular markers [24]. It is proved that SOX5 is up-regulated in various forms of cancer and is associated with poor prognosis of patients.…”

“…Aberrant DNA methylation of SOX11 has been found in cancers such as prostate, gastric, ovarian, and chronic lymphocytic leukemia [13,[18][19][20][21]. In high-grade epithelial ovarian cancer, SOX11 was a tumor suppressor that associated with improved survival [13].…”

“…In high-grade epithelial ovarian cancer, SOX11 was a tumor suppressor that associated with improved survival [13]. In prostate cancer, SOX11 hypermethylation associated with adverse clinicopathologic characteristics, including higher PSA levels, high Gleason scores, and perineural invasion [21]. In gastric cancer, SOX11 methylation associated with Helicobacter pylori infection and related to tumor invasion, Borrmann classification, and tumor differentiation status [19,20].…”
