Promising ZnO-based DSSC performance using HMP molecular dyes of high extinction coefficients

Abstract: Employing newly synthesized di-substituted tri-phenyl amine (HMP-9) and carbazole (HMP-11) dyes (with limited acidic carboxyl anchor groups), a power conversion efficiency as high as 7.03% in ZnO nanocrystallite (NC)-based dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) is achieved. The specific molecular designs of HMP-09 and HMP-11 consisting of with and without hexyloxy spacer groups, and added tri-phenyl amine or 9-phenyl-9H-carbazole donor groups, respectively, attached on the ancillary ligands are advantageous, evide… Show more

“…As compared to TiO 2 , ZnO retains higher electron mobility which should enable it for faster transport of photo-excited electrons. For DSSC application, the performance of ZnO based photo-anodes sensitized with commercial/synthetic dyes are reported elsewhere [15][16][17].…”

“…For ZnO based solar cells, so far the best achieved photo-conversion efficiency is 7%-8%. 24,30,34,36,37 However, such high efficiencies were attained mostly by the aggregated structured/doped/chemically modified electrode or by introducing compact blocking layer in the photo-anode (as summarised in Table II). The production of such electrodes in bulk scale requires costly and complex processes.…”

“…24,28,36,[38][39][40][41][42] For dye sensitized solar cell application, zinc oxide based photo-anode with various dyes and electrolytes has been reported. [29][30][31][32][33][34][35] However, the cells having significant solar to electric conversion efficiency (!2%) and prepared using N3/N719 dyes and I À /I 3 À electrolyte are considered for the present comparison. As envisaged from the table the polydisperse/ aggregated ZnO based photo-anodes are capable to yield the efficient DSSCs.…”
