“…Other published series also reported a median survival time of 9-30 months. [14][15][16][17] The median survival time of 29.3 months and the three-year progressionfree survival rate of 41 per cent in the present cohort are consistent with those of published series. A summary of published data on the characteristics, treatment and outcomes of sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma patients is given in Table III.…”

“…The two-year overall survival rate of 64 per cent in a cohort of patients treated with induction chemotherapy followed by radiochemotherapy reported by these authors was comparable to the results of different surgical series. 14 In the present series, six patients were treated with a similar approach: neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by definitive RT (with or without concurrent chemotherapy). Neoadjuvant chemotherapy reduced the tumour size, and thus helped in RT planning for these patients.…”

“…Induction chemotherapy usually consists of both platinum (e.g., cisplatin) and either 5-FU (i.e., fluorouracil) or etoposide, whereas chemotherapy concurrent with radiation may be restricted to platinum alone (e.g., cisplatin) out of concern for tissue toxicity 7,11,20 . Undifferentiated tumors such as SNUC may not be subject to such rapid deleterious cell repopulation that more differentiated tumors may experience following chemotherapy, and thus they may have an improved response to such treatment.…”

“…7,24 Of further possible benefit, induction chemotherapy may reduce SNUC tumor bulk in areas near vital radiation dose-limiting structures (e.g., optic chiasm) and thus may optimize outcomes achievable with radiation treatment. 7 Specific chemotherapeutic agents and the distinction between induction and concurrent chemotherapy were not evaluated in the present study because information about their use is not available in the SEER database. Given the often poor prognosis of SNUC despite aggressive application of currently available treatments, numerous novel therapies have been tried with limited success including neoadjuvant selective intra-arterial cisplatin, autologous bone marrow transplant, and boron neutron capture therapy.…”

“…Sinonasal undifferentiated carcinoma is particularly difficult to treat [13][14][15][16]. Patients with resectable tumours are offered surgery followed by chemoradiation.…”
