“…It is suggested that upon contact with water, compared to DCF (solubility in water: 0.005 mg/mL), the hydrochloride form of LID (used in this study, solubility in water: 0.6 mg/mL) incorporated within the hydrophilic ALG-CMC 3 matrix dissolves and diffuses quicker through the film, and thus a larger amount of drug is released over time. Overall, the data show that it is possible to carefully tune the release rate of drug using one particular system, as it is demonstrated by several others (Vasilev et al, 2011; Wang et al, 2016; Maver et al, 2018a; Speer et al, 2019). Using thinner and thicker multi-layer coatings, the release rate can be extended even further (desired in treatment of chronic wounds is for multiple days).…”

“…To overcome this problem, micropellets with microcrystalline cellulose and sodium carboxymethylcellulose were prepared. The researchers investigated the incorporation of prolonged release small-size micropellets into ODFs with diclofenac as a model drug [93]. After disintegration of ODFs in the oral cavity, the incorporated matrix particles or micropellets can be swallowed together with the saliva after which the drug is slowly released in the gastrointestinal tract.…”

“…The other possibility is to suspend the drug in the aqueous solution of the polymer used for casting the film, which allows uncontrolled recrystallization to be avoided [8,16,17,[19][20][21][22][23][24]. However, the formulation of such biphasic films, containing suspended API, implies serious challenges regarding the uniformity of the content, texture, and appropriate mechanical properties of the films [15].…”
