Progress towards understanding the pathogenesis of dengue hemorrhagic fever

Abstract: Dengue virus (DENV) is a mosquito-borne virus belonging to the Flaviviridae family. There are 4 serotypes of DENV that cause human disease through transmission by mosquito vectors. DENV infection results in a broad spectrum of clinical symptoms, ranging from mild fever to dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), the latter of which can progress to dengue shock syndrome (DSS) and death. Researchers have made unremitting efforts over the last half-century to understand DHF pathogenesis. DHF is probably caused by multiple… Show more

“…In addition, other flaviviruses have caused numerous epidemics across the globe, as the recent ZIKV outbreaks in Americas and the spread of JEV and WNV into new geographic territories have become serious threats to human health (4,5). It is estimated that over 40% of the world are at the risk of mosquito-borne flavivirus infection, and up to now, no specific antiviral therapy is available for flaviviruses (3,6).…”

“…Moreover, Southern Taiwan has experienced a domestic spread of dengue fever over the last 5 years. According to dengue virus type, large spreads occur approximately once every 4 years, and mixed viruses, which result in dengue hemorrhagic fever, can easily occur [40]. This has contributed to a large amount of wasted medical resources and threatened public health.…”

“…Avoiding proper treatment of cases and not recognizing severe cases early are some of the most important factors that affect the increase in the number of cases of severe dengue and fatal cases. [44][45][46] As a result of the large panel of diagnostic tests used, we have been able to report a high proportion of children with asymptomatic infections (40.1%). This is of particular importance because the Colombian surveillance system has reported in recent years that children younger than 14 years is the group with the highest number of cases of dengue, severe dengue, and dengue lethality, 12,15,[47][48][49] and that the subgroup aged 5-9 years are the most affected, similar to what was found in this study.…”
