Progress on the demand side management in smart grid and optimization approaches

Abstract: The integration of demand side management (DSM) with smart grid (SG) can facilitate residents' transfer into smart homes and sustainable cities by reducing the carbon emission. This manuscript reviews the recent works related to the application of DSM in SG through discussing the techniques and algorithms and their associated challenges for effective implementation. This paper also critically discusses the operation mode of DSM, the profile of energy production, storage and consumption, and finally the benefit… Show more

“…Merging ICT and CI gives a fresh breath, while the concept of DSM is based upon these features. Besides advocating users to take an active part in the power sector, DSM also appraises distributed power generation sources (Arteconi et al, 2017;Sarker et al, 2021). To prevent line losses due to distant transportation of power, localized small-scale power generation plant/s (capable of handling local load based on forecasted demand) is a vital solution.…”

“…These power reserves can be storage devices or small-scale Renewable Energy Sources (RES) or a combination of both (Distributed Energy Resources (DER)). An extensive review of DSM tools is presented in Hussain et al (2020), Sarker et al (2021), Tang et al (2019), and Khan (2019).…”

“…PS and ES were computed hourly and incorporated the detrimental impact that excess consumption can have in the quality of life. Although the state of art may offer other traditional [20] and metaheuristics [21] multi-objective based approaches, the present novel SV-based game-theoretic approach, as seen in mentioned research, offers a simpler and more intuitive way to tackle the problem.…”

“…MG plays a significant supplementary role in the energy system, because it can flexibly adjust DE, battery energy storage system (BESS), and various loads participating in DSM to maintain the stability of the power grid 2 . In addition, it can operate in an island or grid‐connected mode, which can improve the effectiveness of utilization of energy.…”
