Progress in the accuracy of mycotoxin analysis in the last quarter century

Abstract: IntroductionSince food and feedstuffs, such as cereal crops, nuts, spices, dried fruit and fruit juices, can be infected by molds 1) during growth or post harvest handling, mycotoxins can be found as contaminants in these materials 2). They may be present in food and feed without any obvious sign of fungal growth, thus, for human and animal health, determination of mycotoxin contamination in various agricultural commodities is important. For this purpose, much effort has been made to improve analytical methods

“…Along with the increased demand for data accuracy, separation and quantitation procedures have been gradually improved from TLC to HPLC. A review by Honma et al [ 166 ] showed that the determinations of AFB 1 in maize samples were mainly carried out using TLC methods in 1978. However, the percentage of TLC methods usage has been shown to decrease to 48% in 1989, and to 7% in 2002.…”

“…The rise in demand for data accuracy, separation and quantitation of aflatoxin analysis made people to convert to high performance liquid chromatographic compared to thin layer chromatographic ( 24 ). Honma et al ( 29 ) conducted a review that showed that aflatoxin B 1 in maize samples were analyzed using thin layer chromatographic technique in 1978 ( 24 ). The study also showed that the usage of thin layer chromatographic technique has decreased to 48% in 1989 and to 7% in 2002.…”
