Progress in quantitative analysis of plant hormones

Abstract: Plant hormones are small molecular natural products that regulate all plant developmental processes at low concentrations. Quantitative analysis of plant hormones is increasingly important for in-depth study of their biosynthesis, transport, metabolism and molecular regulatory mechanisms. Although plant hormone analysis remains a bottleneck in plant scientific research owing to the trace concentrations and complex components in plant crude extracts, much progress has been achieved in the development of extract… Show more

“…Free IAA is quickly metabolized by peroxidase [3,26] whereas, in its conjugated forms such as IAA-Asp, auxin is partially protected against oxidation [49]. Conjugation prevents free-IAA accumulation in tissues [28], and conjugated IBA may be an even-more stable source of auxin in plant tissues because of its greater resistance to enzymatic degradation [20,162].…”

“…Endogenous IAA concentrations increase during the first 24 h and then decrease over the next 24 h during adventitious root formation in Vigna radiata hypocotyl cuttings [26]. Application of auxins to the base of cuttings has, therefore, been recommended to mitigate the effects caused by rapid oxidation of endogenous IAA [3]. IAA or IBA application to Pisum sativum cuttings increases internal IAA levels within the first day of application [49].…”

“…Due to the low active concentrations of these hormones, methods with high sensitivity are usually required. LC-MS and GC-MS are widely employed techniques in the fields of the qualitative and quantitative analysis of phytohormones [4][5][6][7]. However, chromatographic separation takes a relatively long time during the whole analytical procedure, so it is not suitable for high-throughput screening.…”

“…Moreover, various investigations have been carried out aiming at the isolation of active ingredients from plants used as popular medicines, which have resulted in successful medicines for various aliments. The interest in the use of medicinal plants by governments, industries and institutions has increased the efforts in the research and development of the complementary or alternative medicine [2,5,6]. In consequence, studies regarding the biological effect of natural products are extremely important to aid in the better understanding of the action of these isolated chemical substances of phytocomplexes, as well as the extracts obtained from the parts of plants [3,7].…”
