Progress in aluminium and magnesium matrix composites obtained by spark plasma, microwave and induction sintering

Abstract: Aluminium and magnesium matrix composites are attractive lightweight materials with strength surpassing that of the corresponding matrix metals. Recent years have seen extensive research aimed at finding ways to control the structure of metal matrix composites and obtaining materials with new sets of properties. This review aims to show that field-assisted sintering is a promising approach for the powder metallurgy processing of aluminium and magnesium matrix composites. The review focuses on the achievements … Show more

“…The optimal best value for the beneficiary element is the maximum of the weighted normalised decision matrix, while the optimal worst value is the minimum of the weighted normalised decision matrix, and vice versa for the non-beneficiary attributes as shown in equations ( 6) and (7).…”

“…Preheating and addition of flux increases the wettability of composites. Stir casting, two step stir casting, ultrasonic stir casting, and electromagnetic stir casting are some of the stir casting technologies used in composite manufacturing [4][5][6][7]. In the stir casting technique, the mixture was heated to the molten state before being stirred by the mechanical stirrer [8].…”

“…The interfaces between a metallic glass and a crystalline metal (alloy) are crucial not only in particle- or ribbon-reinforced composites but also in welds [ 96 , 97 , 98 , 99 ] and sintered layered structures [ 50 ]. In a broader context, metallic glass–crystalline metal interactions are special cases of interactions between multi-component alloys and metals, which play a key role in the structure formation of metallic alloy particle-reinforced composites [ 100 , 101 ]. Therefore, studies of the chemical interaction and diffusion between metallic materials of different crystalline structure and composition are of fundamental importance for many systems.…”

“…Magnesium (Mg) is the most crucial candidate among the different materials due to its low density and high specific strength [4]. Mg alloys have many advantages, such as high stiffness, good damping ability, superior biocompatibility, recyclability, machinability and huge hydrogen storage capacity [5][6][7][8]. Nevertheless, the widespread use of Mg alloys is limited due to their poor formability, low corrosion resistance and poor wear properties [9][10][11][12].…”
