Prognostic Value of p53 Expression in Stage IB1 Cervical Carcinoma

Abstract: The purpose of this retrospective study was to evaluate the patterns of p53 expression in stage IB1 squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix, to compare p53 expression with clinicopathological findings, and to assess its prognostic value. 27 patients with stage IB1 squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix underwent abdominal radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymph node dissection. Expression of p53 was studied immunohistochemically. Overexpression of p53 was detected in 33.3% of the tumors, low express… Show more

“…The prognostic significance of p53 protein accumulation is controversial. Chen and others claimed that p53 overexpression has prognostic value [9], while other reports stated it did not [20]. In the present study, we could not detect any prognostic significance of p53 in surgically treated stage Ib+II patients (P=0.3396) or in stage III+IV patients (P=0.0997), being consistent with the latter group of studies.…”

“…However, the clinical prognostic values of TP53 mutations in cervical cancer remains controversial [ 15 ]. It has been suggested that TP53 overexpression is correlated with an unfavourable prognosis in cervical cancer patients [ 16 , 17 ]. Nevertheless, other groups have also reported that TP53 mutations do not display important prognostic values in the management of cervical cancer patients [ 18 , 19 ].…”

“…Peritoneal metastasis in a case of primary SCC of the larynx is a rare occurrence and it carries a poor prognosis compared to usual sites [1]. Immunohistochemical and biomarker studies may reveal a mutation in p53 gene in these types of cases which is indicative of unfavourable prognosis [4].…”
