Prognostic value of matrix metalloproteinase-9 expression in oral squamous cell carcinoma and its association with angiogenesis

Abstract: BackgroundBreakdown of extracellular matrix (ECM) is one of the important hallmarks of cancer progression which facilitates the invasion of tumoral cells to the surrounding tissue. Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) can degrade various components of the ECM and basement membrane. The aim of this study was to determine the role of matrix metalloproteinases-9 protein in the biologic behavior of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and its relation with tumor angiogenesis.Material and MethodsIn this study 42 OSCC an… Show more

“…Percentage of positive cells was the most used method, with further categorization using different cutoff values. Analyses were performed in tumor cells alone (tumor), tumor and stromal cells separately (tumor/stroma), and tumor and stroma simultaneously (tumor+stroma) . Detailed information regarding the main features, and findings of the included studies are presented in Table .…”

“…MMPs, a group of zinc-dependent endopeptidases, can degrade various components of the extracellular matrix and the basement membrane and is associated with tumor progression. 45 MMP-2 and MMP-9 over-activation are linked to poor survival in OSCC cases. 46,47 EGCG, the most well-known polyphenol in tea, inhibits the migration of human uveal melanoma cells by inhibiting MMP-2.…”

“…We found that the anti‐proliferative effect of UA on OSCC cells may be via the downregulation of ERK and p38 expression. MMPs, a group of zinc‐dependent endopeptidases, can degrade various components of the extracellular matrix and the basement membrane and is associated with tumor progression . MMP‐2 and MMP‐9 over‐activation are linked to poor survival in OSCC cases .…”

“…Several studies have shown that LPS also directly induces osteoblast necrosis and apoptosis. In a study of fracture healing in an animal model, the injection of LPS delayed the healing of fractures and reduced the strength of the new bone [15][16][17].…”
